,,,here comes the bride and there went the Greeks ...
We visited Paestum today...the settlement of Poseidonia as it was known, has been excavated in part and is comprised of Greek temples honoring Athena, Hera and Neptune and dates back to the 6th century BC...that's some old stuff !
There were only two or three other people there wandering around the massive temples, so the site was made all the more impressive for us.  This one-time city occupies the center of a large plain between the mountains and the sea and was rediscovered in the 1930s.  Bronze vases were found still containing honey...there is a partially uncovered amphitheater - the remainder is, as yet, unexcavated because it sits under private land...can you imagine having something like that under your house ?

It was a beautiful, sunny day and we spent about three hours wandering and visiting the massive temples and the very comprehensive museum...quite a morning spent amid the ruins.

In the afternoon, we walked the pedestrian area in Agropoli...lovely !  We made our way to the castle at the top of the city, and suddenly saw fireworks...what ??  As we neared the old fortress, we discovered that there was a wedding going on !  The bride and groom were just leaving the ancient castle...what a venue for a wedding...or a vow renewal....the guests, all dressed in black as is traditional here, were throwing candies and rice...we shouted "auguri" which means congratulations, and the bride smiled and said grazie"...the caretaker of the castle told us it was closed, but he let us in for "cinque minuti"...5 minutes...how nice!

After that adventure, we walked down to the harbor and strolled around for another half hour or so...so beautiful !  We MUST walk off some of the amazing meals we're having at our B&B - Baia di Trentova...they feed us too well !

I'll post pics of Paestum and the wedding party on Facebook...

Hugs to all...

Chris and her "we don't need to renew our vows, the old ones are still good" husband
