Villa Romana del Casale...

A few days ago, we took the 1 1/2 hour drive to visit this 4th century Roman villa, and it was well worth the trip.  The country villa is the site of the richest, largest and most complex collection of Roman mosaics in the world.  It appears to have been built atop a 2nd century hunting lodge, and contains room upon room of intricate, colorful mosaics covering every possible square inch of floor space, and once held frescos on every wall.  The frescos were later covered with sheets of granites and marble...everyone has to redecorate, right ?

There were latrines, hot and cold baths, winter and summer dining rooms (depending on the position of the sun), a grand entry and basilica, a hallway half the length of a football field, and many apartments for guests.

It was apparently excavated in the 60's after a landslide in the area uncovered some of the structure...pretty cool !  I say this all the time, but pictures really don't do it justice...

Ciao...Chris and her looking to fix those Roman kitchens husband
