...as for some of the "haves"....
Beautiful churches on every corner in every village...and they're always open ! The artwork is amazing in even the smallest, most out of the way chapel...free for your viewing pleasure...not to mention the church bells playing every hour no matter where you are...
Wonderful, fresh fruit and vegetables sold out of the back of the farmers' trucks...this is the season for artichokes, asparagus, spring onions, new potatoes, HUGE cauliflower, broccoli, eggplant, sweet Sicilian cherry tomatoes, strawberries, and, best of all...lemons and those wonderful Tarocco oranges !
Fresh cheeses made locally and sold everywhere...goat cheese, sheep's milk cheeses, bufala mozzerella (soooo creamy..), smoked cheeses, baked cheeses, grana padana, parmigiano...you name it !
A wide variety of salami, prosciutto, ham, and other smoked and aged meats...every farmer has his own speciality...
Scenery beyond description...around every turn in every road is a panorama to take your breath away... hilltowns perch precariously atop mountains looking as if they could tumble into the sea at any moment...the colors are vivid reds, oranges, ochres...with the blue of the sea and the sky thrown in...wow !
It's springtime here - primavera - so the almond and cherry trees are blooming, and there are flowers everywhere...roses, geraniums, tons of bouganvilla, yellow flowers carpeting the hillsides...wow again...
Most of all, there is a rhythm to life here...chaotic and hectic at first glance, but upon deeper reflection you find a true passion in the Sicilian people for their food and wine, their culture, their families, and their unique island. We are privileged to share this passion with them for a few weeks....
Ciao ! Chris and her amore Joe
